Urgent and emergency, maternity and the vision for King George

A&E, medical and surgical inpatient care, and critical care to be provided at five hospitals - Queen's, Whipps Cross, The Royal London, Homerton and Newham. Urgent care to be enhanced at all hospitals with better and quicker access to tests, consultants and specialist advice.

King George to provide 24/7 urgent care, and short stay assessment and treatment services.

Develop a campus model of maternity care with maternity delivery care at five hospitals – Queen’s, Whipps Cross, The Royal London, Homerton and Newham. A new midwife-led centre at Queen’s and expanded capacity at other hospitals.

Planned surgery to move from Queen’s Hospital to King George Hospital except where there are benefits in co-locating services or on the basis of clinical need.

Services at King George to include:
- 24/7 urgent care and GP services
- Short stay assessment and treatment for children and adults
- Diagnostics - e.g. x-ray, ultrasound, ECG, pathology
- Antenatal and postnatal maternity day care e.g. foetal heart rate monitoring, ultrasound and triage
- Child health centre
- Outpatient facilities and diagnostic services
- Cancer day care (Cedar unit)
- Renal dialysis
- Inpatient and day care rehabilitation services
- Planned care centre, including planned surgery.
Children's care
Provide more specialist care for children at The Royal London and Queen’s and improve the services available at other hospitals. More children to be cared for locally than originally proposed.
Medical care

Early senior assessment to reduce admissions and minimise unnecessary lengths of stay.

Stronger links to be developed between hospital and community-based services.

Children requiring inpatient care to be under the care of a designated paediatrician, even those admitted to an adult ward.
Surgical care

Where safe and appropriate, surgery on children over six months can take place at any hospital in the sector (all hospitals to meet high standards).

Transfer children under six months requiring surgery to The Royal London, except for minor ophthalmic surgery (at any hospital), and neonates already at Homerton.
Transfer children requiring specialist care to The Royal London / improved services at Queen’s or another centre e.g. Great Ormond Street (as now)
Complex vascular surgery
Complex vascular surgery to be performed at The Royal London and Queen’s Hospital.
